Prior to sitting for the certified public accountant exam in California, the Board of Accountancy requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree with 24 units each in accounting and business, as well as ethics studies, followed by at least 12 months of employment by a CPA. The state offers its own ethics exam. It also certifies investigative CPAs, who review accountant work and provide expert testimony for legal proceedings.
